MelVee Sabbath School Study Series Lesson 11 - Backslidden People Key Bible Text: Nehemiah 13:22 WATCH AT - https://youtu.be/jFwh9rzgPQ8 It was not long that Israel broke their many promises & covenant with God. They sacrificed godly principles for worldly benefit. Nehemiah went to Babylon but only returned (around 430-425 B.C.) to witness Israel in a backslidden state. They stopped honoring the Sabbath, paying tithes, and also intermarried with idolaters. Sadly, some leaders were backslidden. Yet, Nehemiah acted to God’s glory. SUNDAY: In Nehemiah’s absence, Eliashib (the priest of the nation) joined forces with Tobiah (a fierce foe of Nehemiah). The alliance between the two probably was formed through marriage. Also, Sanballat, a friend to Tobiah & foe of Nehemiah had a daughter who was married to Eliashib’s grandson. Eliashib gave shelter to Tobiah in the house of God (Deut. 23:3-6; Neh. 13:1-9; 2:10, 19; 3:1; 12:10, 22; 13:28). MONDAY: When the temple of God was infiltrated with sin, Christ boldly drove all merchants away. Likewise, Nehemiah desperately drove Tobiah & threw everything in his room for invading the house of God. Tithes & offerings were not returned to feed the Levites & singers engaged in the temple services. They went into the fields to feed their families due to corrupt Eliashib (Neh. 13:10-14, PK, p. 670). TUESDAY: In reforming the temple services, Nehemiah restored the system of tithes & offerings. It was needed for the temple to function. The fall of tithing is the fall of the whole worship system (Num. 18:21-24; Mal. 3:10; Matt. 23:23; 1 Cor. 9:7-14; 2 Cor. 9:6-8; Heb. 7:1, 2). In its simplicity, tithing projects equity; both rich & poor returning one-tenth of what God has given them (Mal. 3:10, SDA Believe, p. 304). WEDNESDAY: You’re only “one” but you might be the chosen “one” God wants to use to wrought out greater things. As God through Nehemiah brought reforms, so God can use a minority to spark great change, no matter how difficult. No work is to be done on Sabbath, but it was profaned. Nehemiah made sure God’s law was obeyed (Neh. 13:15, 16). When honored, the Sabbath is a blessing (see Neh. 13:17-22). THURSDAY: Nehemiah’s zeal in keeping the Sabbath holy can be seen is his actions. He was ready to “lay hands” (intervene personally) on those who profane the holy day. The Israelites were doing the exact thing which their fathers did to merit curses. Nehemiah set guards at the city’s gates to stop traders from selling on the Sabbath (PK, pp. 671, 672, Matt. 12:1-8, 23:23, Mark 3:1-6, Luke 6:6-11, John 5:5-16). FRIDAY: The work of reformation was nearly over, but Nehemiah returned from Babylon only to find the people lax in their devotion to God. He had to start over. Israel was reminded of their pasts sins & woes, and had the law set before them. Those in sacred offices and everyone who had backslidden were to make no excuse for their sins. Their desire to do away with sin turned God’s anger away. This video was recorded and published by: MelVee Video Productions, "A Divine Voice Out of Africa."
