The setting of the story is just after the miracle when jesus fed five thousand, and Jesus having sent the disciples by boat to the other side of Lake Galilee, he remained behind, alone, to pray. When night fell for the disciples, the wind rose, and the boat became caught in a storm. In the midst of the storm and the darkness the disciples saw Jesus walking on the sea and they were frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost.
