MelVee Sabbath School Lesson 13 (A Community of Servants) Memory Text: Hebrews 10:23, 24 CLICK TO WATCH AT https://youtu.be/UWg12WYbcN0 The church of God is organized for MISSION — i.e. to preach the gospel, and to service or help the needy amongst us. Through the church, God’s love is made manifest. We must not be “distracted with keeping the church itself going” while we ignore the evil that exists around us. God has called us out of darkness to shine His light on the oppressed and needy. We’re the hands, feet, eyes, voice, and heart of Jesus (1 Cor. 12:12-20). God’s sentinels do not only announce the gospel, they’re “agents of change”—they’re living sacrifice (Rom. 12:1), Christ’s body (1 Cor. 12:12-20), ambassadors (2 Cor. 5:18-20), and sweet perfumes of Christ (2 Cor. 2:14-16). Amidst the violence and conflict in our world, they stand as faithful witnesses. Action precedes change, as “agents of change,” they put their words into action—serving others. The distinctive mark of God’s remnant is their love to obey God and testify Jesus Christ (Rev. 12:17). In serving, God’s remnants put others above self. A clear case is Moses and the Israelites (Exod. 32:1-14; Rev. 12:17). When Israel erred and God was about to destroy them, Moses put his life on the line for His people (Exod. 32:32). He did not want God’s blessings alone (vs. 10), but for all Israel (PP, p. 319). Embodied in the gospel is charity or witnessing, justice or evangelism. One is not apart from the other. Our perfect model is Christ in reaching out to souls; He mingled with men, sympathize with them, won their confidence, and bade them, “Follow Me”. He cared for the poor, the sick, and the ignorant and commissions us to do same (MH, p. 143, Matt. 10:7, 8, 1 Pet. 2:12, Phil. 2:15, 1 John 3:16-18, James 2:16). Heaven holds in high esteem those who manifest God’s goodness (Job 1:8) and it’s the will of God that His church serves as a repository of His goodness & mercy (Eph. 3:10). The church is His “household”; there’s no rivalry & disorder but peace (Eph. 2:19, 1 Cor. 14:33). From the local to worldwide church, grace abounds in all her activities. God’s church is a safe place (John 13:34, 35). One cannot deny the injustice, sorrow, and evil in our world. At times, it becomes difficult to accept that God is on our side. Sadness, pain and hurts are real. God therefore bid the church community to be a kind that disseminates His goodness on others (Heb. 10:23-25). Unselfishly, God wants us to work as a team (Rom. 12:3-6). Nothing should stop us from relieving pain and suffering (Gal. 6:9, 10; see Heb. 13:16). Nothing reforms an evildoer than love of Christ bestowed upon him; In the family of Christ, there’s no slavery, racism, oppression, or selfishness. As Christians, we are called to minster to the needs of others, especially others who are hurting, suffering, and oppressed. And though we have our individual responsibilities in this area, as a community focused on ministering to others, we can be much more effective working together as a church family.
